Jockey Cap:

Stories from the Past

A team of horses struggles and sweats as it hauls a three ton block of granite up a steep slope.  Hands burn and fingers freeze as a rope tow pulls skiers through the deep snow.  A raging fire destroys some lives and spares others.  All of these scenes come from the rich history of Jockey Cap, a massive boulder in Fryeburg, Maine.  Seventy-nine sixth grade students at Molly Ockett Middle School in Fryeburg have spent three months reconstructing the past by reading newspaper articles, interviewing local experts, and exploring first-hand Jockey Cap itself.  This web site is their attempt to make Jockey Cap's past come alive.
